They know the words?

But apparently just don't give a damn.

This review from Bristol 24/7 had one sentence in it that made me smirk smugly:
The crowd took the slow song of the encore, It’s Hard Letting You Go, as a cue to go to the bar.
I know it's one of those "alright, be done with the debate already" items like the whole man/band thing, but this is one of my hot buttons.

I love the irony of how Jon trots out the die-hard songs at the European dates because European fans "know all the lyrics" while US fans are "chorus only" fans. Then the stadium empties for a beer run during one of the songs most US die-hards would sell their cars to hear live. Karma rocks.

There were a couple of cringeworthy lines, like Ms. Williams likening Bon Jovi to the Pet Shop Boys (lol) and  calling Richie, Tico, Dave (and Hugh and Bobby) the "backup band" -- but overall it was a positive review.

She wraps with this thought:
You know what you’re getting with Bon Jovi – solid rock pop to sing/dance along to while the frontman does his thing in front of a captivating light show. And you know what, there’s nothing wrong with that every once in a while.
Nothing wrong with it at all. JonBon and his backing band (snicker) will rock Dublin for a couple nights. Perhaps the Dubliners will forego the beer run during the die-hard songs...

You couldn't have said it better Hath!

I agree! LOVE IT!

Now, just to be clear; there are PLENTY of fans in the US who use Richie's solo time and the acoustic set (for example) to refresh their own brews, and who only go a show to hear Wanted and Prayer.

I'm just saying there are die-hard fans EVERYWHERE who will sing along faithfully to every song, every word (without the breaks for $10 beer) in EVERY country the band plays. Including their own.

You know what? After that ridiculous debate, and that ridiculous Facebook page, when you didn't post anything on your blog, I thought you were better than this.
But you choose to trot it out passive-aggressively instead for days to come, topping it with this. Thanks, I think I'll go elsewhere now.

PS: What is the Karma part exactly? He looked really happy doing it and the performance was fantastic.
And thanks for the 'clarification'. It's still true that the bar exodus is way bigger in the US so maybe you should have clarified THAT.

That wasn't a very nice comment.
Hath, don't worry, all your readers agree with you and we all feel the same about our boys.

The Goddess Hathor June 29, 2011 at 2:28 PM

Aw thanks, @Cathy, but nice or not, the person is entitled to his/her opinion. I was going to respond, answer some of the points, but he/she was leaving the blog "forever", so I don't have to bother.

I honestly don't understand what the big deal is with the comment. To each his own, I guess. These are the 3 options that crossed my mind:
1. Jon came across as having one of his ADD moments where he just blurted out an answer to the question.
2. If this has been a longstanding undercurrent with the fans, it appeared like he was "just messing" with everybody.
3. This was his misguided way of trying to stay neutral with the fans on both continents.
He seems to have a natural ability in this regard. He tries to say something, but it comes out "all wrong" and doesn't achieve what he intends.
Love him or not....it's Jon...he's a mess!

I get so annoyed when people leave for another beer. Quite honestly if it were up to me I'd make sure the bars were closed the minute the band went on stage, and that all was available was water. Why spend so much moneyfor the tickets only to spend the night drinking instead? Crazy.

I was at Bristol and I can say noone in Diamond Circle left, but then again I wasn't paying attentoion to anyone other than Richie, who was on FIRE!

Trust me, I was at Bristol in Diamond, and I had friends in Gold circle, none of us saw anyone leaving to get drinks or whatever during or because of those songs. I don't know where the reviewer was, maybe people around her did, but the majority did not.

I hate when it veers into an Us v Them/USA v Europe thing - whether about set lists, or some daft comment Jon made. I always thought it was a global Bon Jovi family but there seems to be a growing rivalry and dislike from some groups for people across the pond in either direction. I got attacked by a fellow Richie fan in the US for buying Diamond VIP because she said it encouraged Jon to raise ticket prices out of reach of "ordinary people" - well I am an ordinary person, I only did one show and paid a lot for it rather than 5 shows and have cheaper seats or GA way back. My money, my choice.

I've waited 15 years to hear Living in Sin live, and I can honestly say everyone I could see during IHLYG was singing along or just soaking it up with joy. I called my friend so she could hear, I called another friend in Canada so he could hear Wanted. That's what Bon Jovi is about for me - loving the music, the friendships I've made and forgetting the rivalry and who is a better/bigger/longer/more proper fan than who.
