Feel Good Story

Kiwi dropped this story in my inbox yesterday, and it's things like this that rekindle my faith in humanity in general.  It's a story about an almost-40-year-old man with Down's Syndrome who is a HUGE fan of the band.  You can read the whole article here at the Idaho Statesman, but here's a little bit about Justin:

Justin Mitton, who was born with the genetic disorder Down syndrome, took a shine to Bon Jovi when its first album debuted in the early 1980s. The 39-year-old, who never let his hair grow wildly long like his idols, has played their music every day since.

Every day? Even now?

“Yeah,” he said with little hesitation.

He listens to music on his iPod now. But sometimes he can’t help singing out loud, and he finds meaning in the lyrics — all of which he knows by heart.

It’s my life
It’s now or never
I ain’t gonna live forever
I just wanna live while I’m alive.

Mitton, whose family calls him “Bergie,” spoke seriously and with sincerity about his favorite band on a recent night at his sister’s house in Boise. Then someone turned the music on.

His face lit up, and he smiled broadly. Pure joy.

And what did they get for their efforts?

Here's the follow up from The Statesman:

A big dream: Justin Mitton, born with Down syndrome, is a lifelong fan of Bon Jovi. His family hoped to concoct the ultimate 40th birthday surprise: a face-to-face meeting. This week, they let the Statesman tell their story.

Well, the call came. Justin’s sister, Sara Mitton Cox, said she got a Facebook message and a phone call from Jon Bon Jovi’s brother, Matt Bongiovi. He said he heard about Justin from three different people.

“He said, ‘I talked to Jon about it this morning,’ ” she said. “He said he wants to make something happen.” She was asked to bring Justin 90 minutes before the Salt Lake show starts.

Justin’s mother, Susan Mitton, was in tears. “I’m just hysterical. I can’t believe it. My sister said, ‘This is like winning the lottery.’ I said, ‘This is much more exciting than winning the lottery. It’s Jon Bon Jovi.’ ”

What a wonderful story. I hope Matt and Jon can make something special happen for Justin. Bon Jovi play Salt Lake City on March 22.

CeDAR Review

The DenverPost.com has a nice article about last night's CeDAR event. I love the comment about the fan's sign :)

Frontman Jon Bon Jovi was front and center as he led his six-piece band through a party set that jogged from covers to favorites. The singer-guitarist, wearing tight black jeans and a fitted black T-shirt, was relaxed and playful throughout the set, often asking the dressy, chatty crowd, "How're we doin'?"

They were doin' just fine, according to the crowd's hands-in-the-air reaction. The band's set suited the party atmosphere inside the ballroom, which had purple, twinkling lights across the ceiling. The band led off with a cover of the Dave Clark Five's "Glad All Over" that went directly into the sing-along "You Give Love a Bad Name."

They joked around like Friday was a public dress rehearsal — all smiles for the fans. One eager fan brought a sign to the front that read, "My husband hates you . . . He knows I dream about you." After winking at girls in the front row through "We Weren't Born to Follow," Bon Jovi asked the fan for her sign. He held it up and read it out loud to the crowd. Catcalls ensued.

"Yeah, but after you're done dreaming," Bon Jovi quipped to the front-row fan, "your husband thanks me for all the attention he gets."

Lost Highway-Era Tico Interview

Stumbled across this in my travels this morning.  A nearly 20-minute interview with Mr. Torres for Undercover News.

Aside from talking about the record, Tico talks about some of the early gigging he did, his influences, his art, and much more.  A great 20 minutes with Tico.

One note to the sexy-baritoned Mr. Torres: "nother" is not a word.  One of my BIGGEST pet peeves is the use of the phrase "a whole nother". What is a half "nother"? Can one have two "nothers"? NO. The phrase is "another whole".

Just sayin'...

PS: I'm downloading the video now, and will have it up on my Mediafire later today or this weekend, and will update this post.

We've all seen the photos and videos of the tremendous floods that have swept Australia.  Sony Music is releasing a 3-CD set to help raise funds for the Salvation Army's Flood Appeal.  This article is from bonjovi.com:

Jovi at Jazzfest 2011!!

I haven't seen it up on bonjovi.com yet, but I'm sure it's just a matter of minutes :)

The New Orleans Jazz Festival 2011 welcomes Arcade Fire, Bon Jovi, Kid Rock, Jimmy Buffett, John Mellencamp, Wilco, Willie Nelson, The Strokes, Robert Plant, Lauryn Hill, Tom Jones, Jeff Beck, Sonny Rollins, Kenny G and John Legend & The Roots to the Fair Grounds in 2011.

The wide-ranging roster of "visiting" artists - those not from Louisiana - seems designed to position Jazz Fest to compete more directly with the likes of the Austin City Limits Festival, Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, even as it builds on a foundation of local music, food and crafts.

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell is April 29 through May 8.

Ticket prices are unchanged from 2010. A first-weekend discount package of three day-specific tickets is $120 plus service charges; a second-weekend package of four tickets is $160.

Advance single-day tickets, specific to each weekend, are $45 plus service charges. Tickets at the gate are $60. Tickets for children age 2 to 10 are $5, available at the gate only.
I believe the Jovi will be performing on April 30.

Wanted Wednesday: Acoustic in Madrid, 1992

Please rise for the playing of our national anthem.

Today's selection comes from an "Acoustic in Madrid" bootleg I found in my pile. This particular track is off of Concierto Basico 40; a Spanish promotional-only 4-track CD featuring exclusive live tracks recorded live at 40 Principales Studios in Madrid, November 1992.

Gorgeous, acoustic, perfect. The whole boot is, actually. Just gorgeous. In fact, it's so pretty, that I can't NOT share the whole thing with you. If you head over to my bootleg trading blog, you can get the link to download the whole show.

Anyway, after a short but lovely guitar intro from our Richie -- I love when he does that -- into the notes we all know so well.

Jon's voice is very strong and emotive in this song. He skips up and down the notes like it's the easiest thing in the world.

The harmonies between Jon and Richie are superb (as always) but you can really hear them meshing together when they play acoustic.

The low key solo (encouraged by Jon's "Come on, baby!") is the "standard acoustic solo" that Richie does when they play this one unplugged, but it's no less spectacular for its regularness.

Jon's voice is a little growly at times, which is amazing, and by the time they tell us they've seen a million faces, you know, you just KNOW you're going to hit 'repeat' on this one.

Let's Ride!!

If you just want this particular song, it's here.

Aprops of nothing...

This article popped in my Google Alerts.  It was a nice little article, and I had to laugh at "...Bon Jovi... who is that?"

What Can A Medical Practice Learn From Bon Jovi?

This past summer, I had a few parents complain to me about our staff. The parents wanted to let me know that they were treated nicely by the staff, but they had noticed things from the employees that they didn’t appreciate. They mentioned that the staff seemed annoyed and irritated, even bored at times and a bit disingenuous.

I wanted to address the issue during our next employee meeting. But I didn’t know how to address it tactfully.

So for our next employee meeting, I brought up the customer service complaints. I talked about what the parents had said. I even admitted struggling with the issue of how to tell them. I told them about my experience at the Bon Jovi concert and how they had rocked it.

They looked at me and said, “… Bon Jovi… who is that?”

I said (work with me here), think of a band that you’ve liked since you were, um… less young. Now imagine going to see them rock out in concert but instead, the band got up and played a half-ass show. They just went through the motion of singing the songs, smiling, but tired. And the band’s excuse? “well, c’mon fans… this is our 200th gig; give us a break.”

I asked, “would that fly with you?” Of course not. The expectation is for the band to rock out like it was their first show. You want to see them work the crowd, dance and play like you’ve never seen them before. To you, it doesn’t matter how many times they’ve played.

It is OK to be tired, bored and wanting to go home. I’m sure Bon Jovi is tired of playing Dead or Alive too. But you would never tell. And that is the lesson I took from going to a Bon Jovi concert.

Posted by Nikki on the WTB Clothing Blog:

Our task was to help the gorgeous correspondent Renee Bargh pick out the gown she'll wear on this Sunday's Golden Globe awards while she interviews the celebrities on the red carpet.

Anybody out there NOT want to model for Richie?  Anybody need help *ahem* with the zippers?  I think his fingers may just be dexterous enough to help a girl out...

I didn't think so :)
