~ Hath

She loaded the page she’d been working on for the whole day and snarled. It looked like a two-year-old’s scrawl on a chalkboard instead of the charming teacher forum she’d envisioned.

Disgusted with herself, she jammed her glasses up the bridge of her nose and brought up her Rated by Randy email. She’d been neglecting her blog, using up her pre-written articles instead of taking the time to write new ones. She had twenty comments waiting for approval in her email and only a few of them were spam. It wasn’t like she had enough to do or anything, but this was her little pet project.

Feeling a set of eyes over her shoulder, she toggled her windows. There were too many prying eyes to do any work on her blog.

“Max, go make some calls or,” she turned to him with eyes wide, “work.” She turned back to her screen. “Stop hovering.”

Max passed his magnifying loupe from hand to hand. “Why won’t you tell me about your date with Nate the Knockout?”

“Because there isn’t going to be a second date, so what does it matter?”

He sat on the corner of her desk. “There has to be a reason why there’s not going to be another. Did he have bad breath?” He frowned. “I sat right in front of him, minty fresh.” He gripped her shoulders, turning her toward him. “Sucky kisser?”

She sighed, resolving herself to the idea that he just wasn’t going to let it go. Max had been quizzing her all damn day. “He’s a really nice guy, but we just have nothing in common.”

“Who cares? He’s delicious, sweet and built like a swimmer on steroids, woman!” Max leaned in and stared into her eyes. She stared back. Suddenly he smiled. “Oh, he got to you.” He hopped off her desk. “You don’t want to go out with him again because little—well, not so little actually—Mr. FedEx made your hormones dance the cha-cha.”

“Max.”

“No, it’s all right. Just because you’ve got a man interested in you that puts half the men in North Beach to shame, that’s fine.” He turned to Ryleigh with a wide and knowing grin. “The man has shoulders that make gay men weep for the other side, mind you.”

Ryleigh propped her chin on her hand and sighed dramatically, as she was supposed to. His attention back on Miranda, Max gave her a pained look. “Honestly, Miranda. What’s holding you back? And if you answer me with a snide comment I’m going to make you swallow this loupe.”

She sighed. “It’s not all about looks, Max.”

“No, but it’s a damn fine place to start.”

“I agree,” Ryleigh called out, rounding her desk. “If you don’t want him, can I take a crack at him?”

Miranda turned to face her. “Have at it,” she said through clenched teeth. She didn’t want him. Who was she to stop Ryleigh from going out with him? She took in her assistant’s sparkly dumbbell stud in her eyebrow today and her compact little body that would probably enjoy climbing all over him. Nate and his broad shoulders and ropy arms, his crooked smile and that shaggy dark hair that made her fingers itch. Ryleigh would look perfect with him.

Max smirked. “I think she’s going to scratch your eyes out.”

Ryleigh leaned against his shoulder. “I think you might be right.” She cleared her throat as Miranda gave her a bland look. “But that’s okay, I am quite happy with the four men I’m juggling right now. Five isn’t my lucky number.”

“Four?” Miranda couldn’t stop herself from asking. God, just the thought of one man in her life part time was horrifying. Even when she’d been a party girl, she’d been happy with the hook-ups, not keeping track of a damn harem. “How on earth do you find the time?”

Ryleigh shrugged and shoved her binder into her bag. “Jason likes to go to lunch with me on Tuesdays and Fridays.” She flipped out her thumb, then her first finger. “David likes dinner on Sundays with my parents so they think I’m finally settling down.” Her pretty face split into a huge smile. “We usually end up having sex in my parents’ neighbor’s driveway on the way out.”

Max’s jaw dropped as he slumped onto the corner of his own desk for a change. “Ryleigh! I called you a trollop in jest, but you so are.” He grinned and held up his hand for a high five.

Ryleigh slapped his hand. “David doesn’t want anything other than great food and sex, it’s perfect. I think I might be dumping Jeremy tonight. Two J names isn’t a good idea when you’re juggling. Then there’s Adam on every other Wednesday and Thursday. He needs two nights to be fulfilled.”

Miranda slammed her hands over her ears. “God, Ryleigh.” It wasn’t that she was disturbed by her actions…it was the memories it invoked. She’d once been just like Ryleigh. She had a man for every night of the week and sometimes two in one night. She just hadn’t kept track of the names and didn’t usually go for repeat performances.

And it was amazing. You could sleep through the night because you had an orgasm, you prude.

“Sorry.” Ryleigh laughed. She slung her bag over her shoulder. “I’m heading out. I’ll have the numbers for you tomorrow morning on the Shelby account so you can make the callback.”

“Thanks, Ryleigh. Have fun,” Miranda said with a shake of her head.

Leo rose from his desk. “I’m heading home too. I have a client meeting across town first thing tomorrow, so I won’t be in until late morning.” He waved his BlackBerry. “Text me if something crazy happens.” He leaned down on his way back. “Take a chance, Miranda. It’s good for you.”

“You too?”

Leo laughed and scooped up his suit jacket on the way out. “I’m always telling you to take the big bet, Miranda. I just don’t have it in me to beat my head into a wall like Max.”

“The big bet doesn’t include the fact that you don’t go out with a woman more than once?”

Leo looked over his shoulder. Thick, honey-blond hair was swept back in a perfect cut except one stubborn lock that fell forward. His perfect blue eyes crinkled in the corners. “I’ve already won, where’s the chase?” He waved. “See you tomorrow.”

Miranda leaned back in her chair. “So, that means it’s time for you to scoot too, Max.”

He crossed his Italian loafer-clad foot over one ankle. “You can’t live your life afraid to move forward, love.” Instead of saying more, he simply cocked his head and looked into her eyes. Sighing, he stood. “Think about it, okay?”

“I know what I’m doing, Max.”

He lifted his laptop case. “You don’t have a clue what you’re doing, besides drowning in this company and growing roots into that terminal.”

She read his body language, the disappointment. “Max—”

“Forget it, Miranda. If you want to spend the rest of your life alone here, with those monitors as your only company, then that’s what you’re going to do. No matter how much I wish I could force you to get out there, in the end it’s up to you.”

“Dammit!” Stella whimpered under her desk and coiled into a ball. Miranda chased after him, but he was already down the hallway. The elevator opened and Max stood face-to-face with Nate. “Hell.”

The contrast between the two men was not so much in their general looks. They were both dark-haired, both arresting in their way. Where Max was shorter, more elegant both in posture and a simple refined grace, Nate was a little rough around the edges, proud and powerful. He was back in his jeans and a long-sleeved T-shirt, his jeans half jammed into the tops of scarred leather boots as if he’d dressed quickly. His dark hair was slicked back, leaving his eyes unframed save for his heavy, dark brows.

Max looked up at Nate, then to Miranda. Without saying a word, he stepped into the elevator. Conscious of the fact that she was standing in the middle of the corridor, she headed back into her office.

“Miranda!”

She stood in her doorway, looking at her desk with the three large monitors filled with images and code. She felt his heat at her back. “I don’t want to be my terminal.”

“What?”

She turned around, searching his gray eyes. Confusion and awareness buzzed between them. “I—” She stepped forward, but he must have understood her impatience and frustration because his mouth was on hers even before she could utter a request.

She gripped his shoulders, her toes already off the floor as he palmed her lower back, the loose cotton of her shirt bunching at her hips. His other hand buried itself in her hair as he angled her mouth for a deeper kiss.

There wasn’t any sweetness in his hold. She’d expected gentleness, maybe a little uncertainty, not this. He consumed her, drawing her tongue into his mouth to twine and tangle with his. She held on, digging into the dense muscles of his shoulders as he liquefied her brain. He tasted like freedom and the Bay.

She’d done carnal, she’d done dangerous, and somehow his taste was a mix of the before and something more. Unknown and frighteningly close to addicting, she let his flavor coil inside her, pushing sensible Miranda down into the sand.

Where she belongs.

His fingertips found skin at the base of her spine, just above the soft yoga pants she wore. She moaned into his mouth. “Touch me, Nathan. I need you to touch me, Nate.”

Meet "New" Author @TarynElliottFic -- and we have a Giveaway!

I've put "new" in quotes because Taryn isn't new.  Nope, she's an author we already KNOW!!

She's TaraLeigh the one behind Tessa and Jon's story, Home.  Now she's writing for Ellora's Cave as Taryn Elliott and her first book, UNCROSS YOUR HEART hits the e-shelves TOMORROW, March 23, 2012.

WOOOOOOOT!

I asked Taryn some questions about her new book, and what's coming down the pipe for her (*snicker* she said 'pipe'). Here's what she had to say:

We know you as Tara Leigh, the author of one of our favorite Jon Bon Jovi fan fiction stories, Home. How did you go from FF diva to published author?

Ha! Diva? I don't know about that. But I do appreciate all the people that supported me when I was writing my Home SAGA. Seriously, kids...320,000 words. That's crazy. Do you know how many BOOKS that is? lol I'll tell you. UNCROSS YOUR HEART is 78,000 words.

o_O

Yep, that was my face when I actually put it all together in one document. I spent so much time learning how to write a story, how to build characters, and to hone my craft I couldn't believe that it ended up being so freaking long. Of course an editor would have fainted seeing something that long. LOL You pretty much max out at 120,000 for a story unless you're JK Rowling, Stephen King, Robert Jordan, or Diana Gabaldon. I'm sure there are more out there, but it's a damn short list.

So...I figured if I could do that, then I could definitely figure out a damn book. As scary as the publishing world is, I already put my bottom-drawer book out in the world and survived. I even gained an awesome following. (btw, bottom-drawer book just means all the mistakes you look back on and wince about in your first story.)

Does your alter ego Taryn have the same kind of style as TaraLeigh? Can we expect steamy sex, and characters that will make alternately love and hate them?

I can honestly say you will find all of those in my book. LOL You thought Tessa had issues? Oh, baby...Miranda has a ton of them!! But I am a romance writer till the end and Miranda gets her happily ever after, with a few orgasms and dash of awesome supporting characters. The Ellora's Cave line is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Tell us about "Uncross Your Heart". Give us the blurb :) How long did it take you to write it? It's the start of a series, right?

Sometimes starting over means facing your greatest fears...

Miranda Woods is adept at pretending to be someone else, someone without a past. She’s able to forget for chunks of time that she comes from a very wealthy, notorious family. She’s given up most of the party-girl vices from her old life, including sex. But that’s before Nathan Cross barges into her life.

To all appearances, Nathan Cross is a simple man—devoted to family and friends, committed to his work. But nothing is simple about Nate’s feelings for Miranda. Fascination quickly blooms to outright lust, and not just for her body. He wants all of her, even the parts she hides from the world. But Miranda’s secrets threaten to drive away the one man capable of helping her come to terms with her past, and allow a future with a love that’s all about truth.
Sounds great, right? Man, I've got a good editor and crit partner that makes me sound like I know what I'm talking about! LOL

I actually wrote the first version of this book while I was still writing Home. I wrote the first draft in Nov '08. (I got yelled at a lot that month because there were practically no updates on Home. LOL) I wasn't completely happy with it so I closed it up and worked on something else. A lot of something elses as it turned out. Life happened and I got a kick in the ass that I needed to get moving on this writer dream I had. It took about 4 months to edit and rewrite and I sent it out June of 2011. Amazingly, I got an acceptance letter about 10 days later.

Nate is one of four brothers that I'm working on (salacious grin) and then there are 2 spin off books in the works as well. So...yep, that's at least 6 in this 'world'. Next up is Matt's story...he's a guitarist in a rock band. NO idea where I'll get inspiration for him. Heh. But there will be nothing easy about Matt's story. His band breaks up, I screw him up royally and then when he's just about rock bottom, I'll throw love into his life. Happiness? Please? Then he'll have to choose career over love. Natch.

What (or who) was your inspiration for the characters in this story?

Nathan Cross...you sexy beast. I found this random picture of a model when I was looking for inspiration and DANG. All I could do was drool for a few minutes. It's okay. Go ahead...

Done?
Okay...close up kill shot.

Maybe now. Please don't short out your keyboards, ladies.

Amazingly he doesn't look anything like my other boyfriend, Jon Bon Jovi, but he's got the shoulders and the eyes...and dang those lips. Oh yeah and the neck. Okay, so he's not so far off from Jon in the hotness areas of delicious.

As for Nate, the character...He's a FedEx guy and inventor. When I was...oh, 16 or so, I used to work in this little corner store and we had the hottest freaking UPS guy that would come in. Seriously...so sweet and always in a good mood. And me, being...well, me. (Seriously, if you know me, you know I'm pretty damn shameless when it comes to hot guys.) I notice and smile and flirt. Because, well...hello. If that (looks up) came to your door wouldn't you notice him and get a little...salacious?

Not my Miranda. *sigh* Dude, she totally doesn't see him at all when he comes to the door. Totally a grab and slam with barely a thank you.

Are you picturing a dejected puppy?

Yep. That's Nate. He's got it bad for the woman he delivers to, but she totally doesn't see him at all. Stupid Miranda.

Now Miranda was created out of a strange fascination with the tabloids. I hate them, yet I have to click on the damn link when I get my US Magazine daily email about whatever crap is going on in Hollyweird. I can't help it. But what if you were one of those people? What if the paparazzi chased you around all the time and showed the bad side of you more often than not. You know...like Paris Hilton. I know I think she's pretty much a ball of fluff on skinny legs without a brain in her head. And that's what a lot of people think because we only get to see the bad side of her. (Now as for Paris...meh. She's annoying imho, but I'm just using her lifestyle as the basis for Miranda) But what if you wanted to walk away from all of that and start over? What if you were so afraid to let anyone in and know who you were that you totally invent someone else. Now...to be extra mean--hey, I'm still TaraLeigh, you know I'm going to be mean--You make her entire world unravel and have her find the one person she can fall in love with at the same time!

Yay for mean!

It makes for a fun story. At least I hope so.

Holy Hanna...I'm still long winded as you can see. LOL

I know you've got more in the works, tell us a little about that.

Yes, I do! I have another book coming out at the end of April. ASHES AND WINE. I'm in the middle of edits on that badboy as we speak.

And that one I totally took Tessa out and plunked her in a book. Yep, Tessa from Home. She's got a new store, As You Wish, and falls in love with a Vintner who also happens to play guitar.

This one is definitely my ode to Home fans.

And yes, I will rip your heart out in this one. I'm sorry. Did you expect anything less with Tessa involved?

Her bestie, Mercy, is going to have her own book sometime this year as well, and the Matt book from the Cross series in the fall.

Are you nervous about your debut?

I've got snakes in my belly right now writing up this interview. Probably why I'm babbling like a lunatic.

I have to ask -- do you picture JonBon when you're writing the sex scenes? Or do you have other delicious men in mind?

LOL No, I don't. When I'm writing my FF I do. Dang, Tessa, Bella and Jamie were freaking fun to write. All the Jon lust I could handle.

Each story has a different guy that I fall in love with. (God, I'm such a hussy.) But it's true. I need the visual aid and once I've got my guy in mind then the story takes over.

Thanks, Taryn, for answering all my questions (even if some of them WERE silly) :)

An HOF You Can Love

New Jersey ranks 11th among the states in population, and 47th in physical size. But in terms of musical importance, it’s second to none.

The state where the phonograph record was invented by Thomas Edison has produced a long list of musical giants. Seeking to honor the state’s greatest talent — and, frankly, annoyed that the national Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has not seen fit to honor some of the most prominent artists that New Jersey has produced — The Star-Ledger and its website, NJ.com, have created the Rock & Pop Hall of Fame. It will live permanently at NJ.com/rockpop and induct a new class annually.

The Class of 2012, listed chronologically (determined by the start of their careers), is:

• Frank Sinatra
• The Shirelles
• The Four Seasons
• Dionne Warwick
• George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic
• Kool and the Gang
• Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
• Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes
• The Smithereens
• Bon Jovi
• Whitney Houston
• The Fugees

Why did they pick these 12? Visit the website to find out.

I do have to share some of the utterly delicious pictures that NJ.com posted for Bon Jovi... You can see the rest on the "Bon Jovi" page at the NJRPHOF website.

Looking to help homeless vets?

From the Asbury Park Press:

Looking to help homeless vets? Jon Bon Jovi and the White House are working on an app for that.
Bon Jovi, along with Shaun Donovan, secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and W. Scott Gould, deputy secretary of Veterans Affairs, unveiled a contest Monday called Project Reach, which calls for the development of a user-friendly application that provides real-time information about the availability of shelters, meals and care for homeless vets.

“We'll access veterans to — in instant and real time — medical, food, shelter and social services via the Internet and what a better way to do that than through the innovative minds of the technology community,” said Bon Jovi, speaking on the conference call from his Soul Kitchen restaurant on Monmouth Street in Red Bank.

The contest calls for techies to find an easy-to-use, mobile and Web app to connect users to service providers and real-time information about resources for the homeless and others in need.

The contest is using Monmouth County as its proving ground, and the first five entries that meet requirements will receive a $10,000 cash prize and the opportunity to test their app at Soul Kitchen.

The winning entry receives a $25,000.

Soul Kitchen

The inspiration for the app contest came, in part, from an experience Bon Jovi had at his pay-what-you-can Soul Kitchen.

“There was a man here at the Soul Kitchen. He wasn’t a veteran, but unbeknownst to us he was actually homeless,” Bon Jovi said. “He volunteered to earn his meal that night, and he stayed late into the evening. When we realized he ultimately had nowhere to go, it led us to the Internet.”

Once there, Bon Jovi found real-time information lacking.

“We wanted to help, but we didn't have real-time information,” Bon Jovi said. “We didn't know how many beds were available, or at the Parker (Family Health Center in Red Bank), was there a doctor or a dentist?”

The assumption is that if not all homeless vets have cellphones, intermediaries would.

“They’re coming to soup kitchens, they're coming to places like the Soul Kitchen, they’re coming to medical centers here in Monmouth County,” said Bon Jovi, a native of Sayreville.
There are 67,495 homeless veterans in the country, according to the departments of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development.

Visit www.challenge.gov for more information.

Bon Jovi is a member of the White House Council for Community Solutions.
