The Archive: BON JOVI – November 1, 1989 (On The Street)

From Steve Mascord

Thanks, Catte, for the find.  Definitely a fun trip down memory lane :)

Over a quarter of a million people have experienced his brand of noisy rock first hand on the current tour, and it doesn’t finish until February. In between, Jon has has enjoyed the success of proteges Skid Row and worked on albums by Alice Cooper and Cher. There’s been an “historic” Russian festival which was apparentIy more notable for its backstage shenanigans than for its onstage feats (more about that later) and, yes, even Jon’s top secret marrage to long time sweetheart Dorothea Hurley.

Jon, one time studio hand at the Power Station in New York, is now certified American cultural figurehead. But while he’s rarely been one to kiss and tell, isn’t being married on the quiet a bit like, well, a rock star?

"We knew if we had a regular wedding, we would have had to invite a thousand people,” he says. “And I didn’t do it for those thousand people, or for my record company..or for my manager. I did it for me, I did it for her. We didn’t tell anyone. We didn’t tell our families, we didn’t tell our friends, we didn’t tell the band.

"I don’t need to hide it. But like, there’s nothing left in my life that’s private any more. I can’t sit in my own house with the bedroom windows without the shades on ‘em because somebody’s taking a picture of my bedroom window. You know, there’s always somebody hanging out in front of my house. People are wonderful, mind you, they’re great people but I can’t do anything in private."

Jon is so agreeable it’s almost as if you think you’ve called the wrong house.

The whole interview/article can be found here. Quite amusing :)

On the road with Bon Jovi

MusicRadar goes backstage with the techs for Bon Jovi to poke around the rigs of Jon, Richie, David, and Bobby.  A full-length feature on Tico's rig will be available in issue 1985 of Rhythm magazine, on sale 27 September 2011.

MusicRadar jumped at the chance of having a backstage tour of Bon Jovi's mammoth guitar and keys rigs when The Circle tour reached Bristol, UK.

With much gear fondling and drooling to be had, we chatted to backline crew chief Mike Rew, David Bryan's keyboard tech Bill St Amor, and Kurt Kassinoff, guitar tech to Jon Bon Jovi and longtime touring rhythm guitarist Bobby Bandiera. We also managed to sneak a look at some of Richie Sambora's live gear into the bargain.

Dodging a never-ending tour of competition winners and tech college students traipsing through the backstage area on the day we are with them, Bill and Kurt take us around their gear-packed tech-ing stations and let us get up close and personal with the guitars and keys that create Bon Jovi's classic rock sound.

Some great descriptions, shots, and insight into the gear.

Sambora says Thank You

From the Quantico Sentry Online:
Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora said he wanted to do “anything to give back to the guys who are out there fighting for our freedom. I travel around the world, and I have for 30 years, and what I enjoy most about America is our freedom.”

One of those guys is Gunnery Sgt. Matthew Plescia, who has served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. In the course of his military service, Plescia has spent a total of about 10 years separated from his family, and although he was stationed at Quantico when he signed up for a chance to win one of the 100 signed, numbered, travel-friendly guitars that Sambora is giving out to Marines and sailors this summer, he has now been moved to California, while his wife and daughter remain here in Triangle.

“I’m a product of the ’80s. Bon Jovi was one of my favorite bands growing up,” Plescia said, remembering how he had caught the band’s “New Jersey” tour in his senior year of high school.

He was one of five Quantico Marines who each won a Voyage-Air acoustic guitar with a travel pack, extra strings and a guitar tuner in Sambora’s raffle. The guitars fold in half, making them convenient for travel such as overseas deployment. The four service members remaining on base were presented with the guitars Thursday morning, July 28, in the theater at Little Hall.

In a phone interview that night, Sambora, who was between concert dates in Spain, said he had received one of the guitars for his birthday and thought it would make a fitting gift for a service member stationed overseas. “The Marines, they need something compact, but they do a lot of hanging out too—when they’re not fighting, obviously.” He contacted the Marine Corps in October to set something up, and MCCS came up with the idea to raffle off the guitars. Entries were accepted in April and May. “It turned out to be a big success and we’re very excited about it,” Sambora said.

Visiting Brinjuni

From Crush Magazine:

Jon's holidays in Croatia are being followed every day by the local press. Yesterday this picture came visiting the Brijuni archipelago where we can see Jon wearing a brace on his recently operated knee.

Come Fly With Me...

Please rise, for the singing of our national anthem...

The end of the US leg (the lo-o-o-ong US leg) of the SWW tour. Fitting that we visit that tour during the 25th Anniversary week of the record being released.

You can hear Jon's voice STRAINING with this song. It sounds amazing, but must have hurt like heck.

Let's Ride!

And here it is on my Mediafire.

Bergman Interview

Thanks, Catte, for the summary, and the Mediafire upload :)

~ Hath

Interview on Silverman on Sports

Bergman talks a lot about being on tour and hanging out with Jon, including giving Jon photography lessons and being in the operating room shooting Jon's knee surgery.

Also some really fun/cute talk about Jon the Sports Fan.

And he confirms there are plans for a book (though he's not sure when) of his tour photos, and possibly a gallery show of many of the behind-the-scenes images.

That would be COOL.

And sounds like he'll go back out with them again next tour...

Streamed and uploaded to MediaFire if anyone's interested.

Slippery Interview

Jon and Richie were guests on In The Studio this week, talking about the 25th anniversary of Slippery.

Thanks Amit and Liz for sending me the reminder :) I'll try to stream it later (can't from work) and post if for you all.

Update: Thanks Catte for streaming it and uploading it to my Mediafire.  Thank goodness you don't have pesky firewalls :)

More Croatia Pictures

Thanks to Imp and Kiwi for sending these pictures along.  I've gotta say, he's being a good sport about the photogs chasing him around.

And, for those of you who have to know where Jon is while he's on his trip, there's apparently a website that tracks the location of marine traffic while the vessels are out-and-about.  It's a pretty cool thing -- sort of like tracking your flight with the airlines. Folks have been tweeting the link, so it's out there if you need it.

Richie/David Interview

From the end of June, 2011.

Thanks Imp for sending the link to this along :)

And Richie, quit teasing us with the solo stuff -- I think the phrase is "put up or shut up".  And please, not that stuff you're doing with Nikki.  I get that it serves its purpose with the clothing line, but the mainstream fandom would like your OWN flavor of stuff, please.
