Remember When...

So earlier I posted the For Sale notice for Jon's childhood home.  AND I neglected to thank Rike for sending me the link for that, so sorry Rike, and THANKS!!!!

Well, RutPop thought it'd be neat to revisit the 1989 article from the MTV Giveaway contest.  I think so too.

Here's the article, from the NYTimes archives:

Fan's Prize: Bon Jovi's Jersey Roots
By WAYNE KING, Special to the New York Times
Published: March 28, 1989

SAYREVILLE, N.J.— When Jon Bongiovi was a tyke, 3 or 4 years old, growing up in a pleasant subdivision here, his mother, Carol, used to dress him up "like a little doll," as she put it, for little performances.

"I would hold him in front of a mirror and dance with him," Mrs. Bongiovi recalled recently. "And then I would get him to stand up, and I'd applaud and show him how to stand up and take a bow."

These days, Jon, his name streamlined to Bon Jovi, is still taking bows, though his image as one of the world's biggest rock stars tends more toward black leather and sweat. But his mother is still very much part of the act: with the help of MTV, the rock video network, she is preparing to give away the family home to a fan of Mr. Bon Jovi, whose latest album is "New Jersey."

Jon Bon Jovi now lives in much more upscale Rumson, N.J., a street or two away from Bruce Springsteen, a fellow New Jersey native. But Mr. Bon Jovi is helping to give away his boyhood home on Robin Hood Drive here. 'Finer Things in Life'

"This isn't just a house, man, it's the place where I grew up!" he says in a promotional spot for the MTV giveaway. "It's my boyhood home, man. This is the place where I learned about the finer things in life. Like rock 'n' roll. And women." Viewers can enter the drawing for the house by calling a number that is scheduled to be shown on the network tonight.

A fairly typical four-bedroom colonial in Sayreville, a Middlesex County borough of 34,000, the Bongiovi home of 24 years is now something of a mecca for fans. That has been fine with Mrs. Bongiovi, who is president of the Bon Jovi Fan Club, but it has also been a bit of a pain in the neck. When Jon is in town, the street can become a mob scene. The police have been called.

Mrs. Bongiovi enjoyed the attention, but as her husband, John, a hairdresser, approached retirement, they bought a new house in another town to get some privacy. She is hoping they have a few months of peace before they are discovered.

"If I have a garage sale, I'm having it by appointment only," she said. Bar or Boardwalk

The Bongiovis had intended to rent the house to friends. But MTV promoters were looking for what Abbey Konowitch, vice president for programming, called "a piece of New Jersey" to give away as a tie-in to Mr. Bon Jovi's album.

"We talked about giving away a bar, a piece of the Boardwalk in Asbury Park, something tangible that would say New Jersey and would give some additional notoriety to the region," she said.

They even considered the house of Danny Paranella, who was Mr. Bon Jovi's guitar teacher and whose house on Mr. Bon Jovi's very own street was for sale.

Enter 14-year-old Matthew Bongiovi, Jon's youngest brother, who suggested that MTV buy their house and give it away.

Neither party will discuss specific finances, except to say that the network paid "fair market value" for the house, which Mrs. Bongiovi said was appraised for a little under $300,000. The winner will also get $10,000 for local property taxes.

Mr. Paranella's house, alas, is still for sale, at about $200,000.

Meanwhile, another Sayreville resident, James Robinson, a former assistant recreation director for the city who hired Jon for occasional local appearances, is proposing a Sayreville Hall of Fame. The top candidate is Mr. Bon Jovi.

"In spite of his fame, he's clean, he's wholesome, he's God-fearing," said Mr. Robinson, who felt constrained to add, "I'm not saying the guys in the band are saints, but they're not bad guys."

Mr. Bon Jovi did raise some local headlines this month when he and three friends were arrested in Manhattan after sneaking onto the ice of Wollman Rink in Central Park early one morning. But he crusades against drugs, and as a promoter of his home state, he has powerful defenders.

In his State of the State Message this year, Governor Thomas H. Kean irked some Sayreville residents when talking about the intricacies of liability insurance, he light-heartedly remarked, "Insurance is even more arcane than the law, quantum physics or why teen-agers listen to Bon Jovi."

Assemblyman Alan Karcher, who represents Sayreville, took that as something of a civic slander. On March 2, he rose in the Assembly to defend the singer. "Teen-agers listen to Bon Jovi because they're great." he said, and suggested that the Governor's values were askew.

"Jon thought enough of his home state to call his latest album 'New Jersey.' We all complan when some star makes fun of New Jersey. Here we've got a superstar who's proud of his home state, and the Governor is criticizing him."

Penn State Gets Lorenza!

From Bon Jovi's Website:

ANNOUNCING LONGTIME COLLABORATOR LORENZA PONCE AS SPECIAL GUEST IN STATE COLLEGE, PA FEBRUARY 9TH AT BRYCE JORDAN CENTER

(State College, PA – January 26, 2011) – As Bon Jovi gears up for another stellar year of performing, the band with the #1 tour of 2010 has announced that their longtime collaborator, singer/violinist Lorenza Ponce, will appear as the group’s very special guest at the 2011 tour kick off on February 9th at Bryce Jordan Center in State College, PA. As part of the extended Bon Jovi family since 2001, Ponce was featured prominently on the band’s 2007-08 Lost Highway Tour. Now, the multi-talented musician has been invited to perform opening sets with her own band at Bon Jovi’s concerts in State College, as well as Uncasville, CT on March 4th.

Ponce first performed with Bon Jovi after September 11, 2001, when she was called upon to support the band members at 9/11 events including the Tribute to Heroes Telethon and the historic Concert for New York. Ponce subsequently became a permanent member of Jon Bon Jovi’s solo acoustic group, and was then asked to join Bon Jovi’s Lost Highway Tour as well as their MTV Unplugged performance. In addition to her work with Bon Jovi, Ponce has toured the world and played alongside such notable acts as The Dixie Chicks, Sheryl Crow, Ray LaMontagne and Dolly Parton.

Now, can we please announce all the rest of the openers? Really, they should be set when the tickets go on sale so we know what we're getting ahead of time...

The Starland Show

"You did a good deed," Jon Bon Jovi told the sold-out house at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, at the conclusion of his ninety-minute concert.

He'd led his seventeen(!) piece group through rock classics ("Start Me Up," "So You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star") and pop-soul favorites ("Glad All Over" by the Dave Clark Five, Wilson Pickett's "634-5789"), made room onstage for Southside Johnny for a few numbers, and vacated the premises for a fifteen-minute stretch while his band of Friends took center stage.

He did some of his own material, too. Sixteen songs into the show, Bon Jovi gave the crowd what it wanted the most, playing "Wanted, Dead or Alive," "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Who Says You Can't Go Home," and "We Weren't Born to Follow," the lead single from "The Circle" LP. Later, he'd encore with an acoustic -- and considerably defamiliarized -- version of "Living on a Prayer," his signature song.

The show -- not quite a Bon Jovi concert, and not quite a blithe classic pop revue -- was held to benefit the Parker Family Health Center, a clinic in Red Bank. The Center provides primary care, immunization, mammograms, diabetes treatments, and other services for Monmouth County residents (the Parker Family clinic counts 85,000) who are underinsured or uninsured. Bon Jovi spoke about the importance of the Parker Family Health Center between songs, and discussed his own continuing commitment to its operation. He talked about the clinic without rock star bluster; he was conversational, and, at times, emotional.

That gravity colored his performances. He opened the show with a slow acoustic rendition of the Beatles' "Help," turned "Lonely" (a song from the "Lost Highway" sessions) into a plaintive entreaty, and, most remarkably, stripped the usual triumphalism from "Livin' On a Prayer." Instead of soaring to the high chorus, he altered the melody, kept his voice low, and allowed his six-voice choir to sing the hook. On Thursday night, Gina and Tommy weren't just defiant rock and rollers: They were broke kids lost in the system, maybe a little frightened, too. They were the kind of people, Bon Jovi implied, who might need the services of the Parker Family Health Clinic. This reimagining stripped some of the exhilaration from the song, but it demonstrated its flexibility. "Livin' on a Prayer" is more than just an arena-rock shoutalong.

Time Wasters (Non Bon Jovi)

Ok, so here, snowed in in Boston, with my husband working in our home office, me taking over the dining room, and Hathlet happily ensconced in his boy-cave, we girls got a little silly.

It started with this.

I would so totally move to Aruba.

Well then there came this, which always cracks me up.  Ordinarily, the talking baby commercials creep me out, but not this one.  This one and the "Milkaholic Lindsey" get me every time.

Then Catte sent this one, which I've never seen before.

Which quickly turned to this

and this:

aaaaand then I passed along one more and now I have to go back to work.

Hope that little time waster brought a smile to your face. Now, back to work. Ugh.

Memphis in Chicago

As seen on Playbill:

The Tony-winning Broadway musical Memphis will play a two-week engagement in Chicago this fall.

The David Bryan-Joe DiPietro musical, which will launch its tour in Memphis in October, will play Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre Nov. 22 through Dec. 24.

Memphis features book and lyrics by DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) and a score and lyrics by Bon Jovi's David Bryan. Christopher Ashley directs.

Chad Kimball (Into the Woods, Lennon, The Civil War, My Life with Albertine) and Montego Glover (The Color Purple, Ragtime, Aida) star as DJ Huey Calhoun, and his muse, Felicia Farrell, respectively, in the Broadway production. Casting for the tour has yet to be announced.

"In the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated '50s," press notes state, "a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun fell in love with everything he shouldn't: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer. Memphis is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music changed forever."

Tickets for the Chicago engagement are available now for groups of 15 or more by calling Broadway In Chicago Group Sales at (312) 977-1710. Individual tickets will go on sale at a later date.

The Band Needs a Break

Billboard is running an article based on an interview with Richie and Tico.

"I think we need to take a break," drummer Tico Torres told Billboard.com during a conference call with reporters. "It's a long, extensive tour since last February, not just the tour but putting it together, doing the record ['The Circle']. It's a long process, and I think it's important for us to just get away from the audience for a bit. Sometimes you need to get away so people can appreciate you better, and you also have to get away to live your life and create and recharge... So the best thing I can tell you is we're gonna need a couple years off for sure."

Guitarist Richie Sambora, however, countered, "We do need a little bit of a break, but not that much of a break, 'cause what's going to happen is there's more songs to be written and... Y'know, guess what? We want to be the Rolling Stones. I know I do."
So a couple years off or less, depending on what everyone's doing, and what the music muses demand. Kinda what we figured.

But with the Bon Jovi Live 2011 Tour kicking off tonight at the Starland, and going through the summer, we don't have to worry about the hiatus. Not yet.

Rumors Abound...

... about Israel and South Africa dates.  Nothing has been posted on the Bon Jovi website (and any talk here or anywhere else -- no matter how reputable the site -- is just rumor until you see it on bj.com) but there has been some talk around the 'net.

The BlaBla Blog has a great argument for Johannesburg being closer to reality than rumor.  They list four clues that the band is South Africa bound:

Clue #1 – Big Concerts Promise Four Big Announcements
Clue #2 – Jon Bon Jovi Mentions Visiting South Africa (on LKL)
Clue #3 – A Two Month Gap Appears in the Tour Schedule
Clue #4 – Bon Jovi Provisionally Booked Cape Town Stadium on 21 April 2011
As to Clue #3 -- there isn't a full gap as the boys are playing JazzFest again this year, but still... interesting...

Meanwhile, the Israel Ministry of Tourism posted this on their Facebook:

Grammy Award-winning rock and roll band Bon Jovi has announced its first-ever performance in Israel at Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, April 27. The concert follows performances by Ozzy Osbourne and Elton John in Tel Aviv last year.
We'll wait for the official announcement on the Bon Jovi website, but we'll keep on talking about it!!

Soul Kitchen Serves as Inspiration

Another feel-good story.  I love it when people out there take GOOD things and replicate them.  Kinda restores a bit of my faith in humanity.

Central Jersey has an article on a community dinner that was served in Princeton, at "One Table Café" at Trinity Church.

”In April 2010 we went to Red Bank and met with Dorothea Bon Jovi, wife of John Bon Jovi and head of the Soul Foundation. They had started a venue called Soul Kitchen in Red Bank that is currently in operation,” said Meg Novins Hanington, a member of the outreach committee who helped organize the dinner. “They inspired us to keep going and flesh out how this could work in Princeton.”

With a pay-what-you-can philosophy, empty envelopes were passed out at the end of the evening. Organizers declined to say how much was raised by the dinner, but the amount “greatly exceeded their expectations.”

Additional community dinners will be held on Feb. 18 and March 18, reservations are required and can be made by calling (609) 613-6950.

If you can't pay back a kindness, pay it forward.

Great message.

Wanted Wednesday: San Diego 1992 (Richie)

Please rise for the playing of our national anthem.

It's Richie's turn again today.

Today's choice is from the 1992 Pecos Theater show in San Diego.  This sound-board quality boot is just a whole lot of fun all the way through.  This song though -- I love the clarity of the recording almost as much as the recording itself.

Every hitch of Richie's voice.  Every growly bluesy note.  Pure, pure perfection.

This show, Richie's band included Tico, David, Randy Jackson and Tony Levin.

And of course, the backing vocals of the lovely Ms. Crystal Taliefero.

Cmon, let's Ride!!

Jon Bon Jovi to Rock Spinoff Movie

Now, Jon has told us all over the years that he lies. He says it tongue in cheek, and we take it in the spirit in which it is intended -- like there are simply some things that are out of his control. Apparently, imperviousness to the acting bug is one of those things.

Last February, Garry Marshall's Valentine's Day hit theaters. According to this article from the Moviefone blog, before this one was released, the follow-up was already being planned, and Marshall being courted to direct.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jon (along with Seth Myers, Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Abigail Breslin, Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank and Sofia Vergara) will "putting on their party hats for New Line’s all-star ensemble New Year’s Eve, being directed by Garry Marshall."

The movie tells intertwining stories of a group of New Yorkers as they navigate their way through bittersweet drama and romance over the course of New Year's Eve.

Bon Jovi is playing -- here’s a stretch -- a successful rock star who once dumped Berry’s character of a caterer but now finds himself face to face with again at a party.

Meyers will play a broke dad who wants his wife (Biel) to deliver the first baby of the year in order to win a $25,000 reward and finds himself in a heated competition.

Bon Jovi last movie appearance was National Lampoon’s Pucked in 2006. Meyers, head writer of Saturday Night Live, just wrapped I Don't Know How She Does It with Parker.
So I guess we can forgive Jon for "lying" about acting, because seriously, who could blame him for wanting to be in a picture with DeNiro and Halle Berry? Especially where Berry plays his ex and there's a chance at rekindlement?

The movie (at least according to the Moviefone blog) is expected to release late this year.

The Christmas must-see for 2011? We'll see.

Richie's Tree House

This popped in Google Alerts for some of us, and Catte had to forward this along with a WTF label :)  Somehow I don't see Richie being all Weeble-like and living in a tree house.  Frankly (sorry Rich) I don't see Richie even BUILDING a tree house.  Having one built for Ava? Sure, though she doesn't strike me as the tomboy-climbing-a-tree kind of child.  But living in one?  C'mon people.

Though I would pay dearly to have someone ask this of Jon/Richie at an interview -- just to get the reaction.
