David Bryan is a founding member of Bon Jovi, the iconic rock group that has sold more than 130 million records and played to audiences around the world. But the classically trained pianist should also be known for a different accomplishment: Broadway composer.
He wrote the music and co-wrote the lyrics for “Memphis,” the hit play by Joe DiPietro about a Tennessee disc jockey who introduces “race” music to white audiences. Bryan — born David Bryan Rashbaum — recently spoke to the Forward from California, where Bon Jovi was performing:
Forward: What happened when you first got the script for “Memphis” in 2002?
David Bryan: When I first read the script, I heard everything [in my head]: the music, the lyrics… I went down to my studio, put on the drum machine, sang lead and harmonies. I burned it onto a CD and FedExed it to [DiPietro]. He called me and told me, “You got the gig.”
When you say you “got it” when you read the script, what do you mean?
The story rang true to me. I’m a white Jewish kid from Edison [N.J.], and I know racism and hatred. When you see that in the show onstage, you see how ugly that looks. Hopefully that will teach you a little bit that that’s not the way people should be treating each other.
Is that something you learned in synagogue?
I went to Temple Emanu-El, and my rabbi, Rabbi Landsberg, was a huge influence on me. When I was 7 and went to kindergarten, there he was, a young rabbi who didn’t wear a yarmulke and rode a motorcycle. He used to say, “Every man and woman walks down the road of life.” He definitely made me the person I am.
Do you still stay in touch?
When I come back off tour, I visit with him and we talk. He was at my [twin] daughters’ bat mitzvah. [I belong to a different synagogue now] but I always come back for Rosh Hashanah and blow the shofar.
What are you working on now?
Joe and I have another musical in the works. It takes place after “Memphis,” in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and it’s about songwriters. It’s not the Brill Building, but it’s based on that era, when Jewish kids from Brooklyn only a generation or two in the United States and African Americans from the South wrote and recorded great music.
A new musical! Very exciting!

Philly Soul Free Show Announced
Bon Jovi will give a free, special ticketed performance for former Philadelphia Soul season ticket holders and fans on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at the Wachovia Center at 5:00pm. While only fans with tickets can be admitted, through the cooperation of WMMR, those that can’t attend can tune-in live via a commercial-free radio broadcast at 93.3FM in Philadelphia or stream it live via www.wmmr.com.
Starting today, a limited number of tickets are now available. Former Soul season ticket holders have been alerted via direct email outreach. All other fans can enter to win tickets online at www.wmmr.com and through on-air call outs on WMMR leading up to the show.
The announcement honors a commitment made by Jon Bon Jovi on WMMR’s Preston and Steve show when he predicted a championship win for the Arena Football team he co-owned, The Philadelphia Soul. He also promised a free performance if his prediction proved true.
Although the Philadelphia Soul claimed victory at the July 2008 ArenaBowl, the Arena Football League had simultaneously begun their own fight for survival that spanned two years and sadly, resulted in the suspension of League operations.
The bittersweet announcement of this special concert to celebrate The Philadelphia Soul brings Jon’s promise full circle as Bon Jovi prepares for two sold-out shows in Philadelphia next week (3/23 and 3/24) at the Wachovia Center
So... fans of the Soul (and the Jovi) can't purchase tickets, unless you're season ticket holders?
Everyone going to Philly, ENTER THE CONTEST!!! :)

Are You Freaking Kidding Me?
Universal Music Group announced the introduction of Six-String, a premium iPhone application promising a virtual guitar experience incorporating original master recordings of chart-topping hits. According to UMG, Six-String requires users to pluck, strum and change chords a la the smash Guitar Hero franchise--players can hone their skills in either Practice Mode or Studio Mode, and after the game's first month, the label will award a Fender Stratocaster to the player topping the Six-String Hall of Fame leaderboard. Users can also post score updates to Facebook, Twitter and email.
Priced at $4.99, Six-String comes with half a dozen tracks: Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name," Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down a Dream," Peter Frampton's "Show Me the Way," Orianthi's "According to You" and the Scorpions' "Raised on Rock." Twenty additional game tracks are available for in-app purchase, including songs from Beck, Dashboard Confessional, Maroon 5, No Doubt, Robert Palmer and Wolfmother. Users can also purchase the corresponding song, video and ringtone from Apple's iTunes media storefront.

Richie Interview
Few bands have managed the endurance game like Bon Jovi.
Nearly three decades after cutting its teeth on the New Jersey bar scene and its reign atop the late-'80s rock scene, the group continues as one of the world's top touring draws.
After a slight dip in the early '90s -- temporarily displaced by the rise of grunge and alt-rock -- Bon Jovi returned to superstar status through a series of best-selling albums and hit-laden shows. Latest is "The Circle," featuring new blue-collar arena anthems from Jon Bon Jovi and guitarist Richie Sambora.
An upbeat Sambora spoke with the Free Press last week from a Kansas tour stop, as the band set its sights on tonight's Palace show.
QUESTION: The band just finished sound check and the show starts in a couple of hours. After all these years, do you still have nervous energy as you prepare to step onstage?
ANSWER: It's excitement, not nerves, really. On this particular tour we want to make sure we cover a lot of ground. We've got 15 albums with so many songs to choose from. Before the tour, Jon sent a list to everybody with 70 songs on it. ... You've got to keep it fresh, and we try to integrate new songs into the set every evening, taking requests off our Web site. We have a different set every night. Jon is always calling audibles. He's like a quarterback up there.
Q: The new album returns your guitar work to a more prominent role. How do you think your playing has changed over the years?
A: Honestly, there are a lot of good guitar players out there, but they're not all songwriting machines. They're more technical guys. I choose, because I'm a songwriter, to play what's going on with the song. With "The Circle," it's a very guitar-oriented record. I got to stretch a little bit, get a little more technical. You grow with the music you write.

Who Remembers...
... when MTV gave away Bon Jovi’s childhood home in Sayreville, New Jersey for a contest, way back when MTV still had something to do with music.
Anyone?
Apparently, it was 21 years ago yesterday.
Thanks, Catte, for reminding me :) I actually remember seeing this on MTv back in the day.
And wondering if JonBon had left anything behind for the lucky winner.

Attention CT Bands!
Here's your chance for a taste of rock stardom: Bon Jovi is looking for local bands to warm up the crowd when the New Jersey rockers return March 26-27 to Mohegan Sun.
The band has partnered with local Clear Channel radio stations WKSS-FM (Kiss 95.7), WHCN-FM (The River 105.9) and WWYZ-FM (Country 92.5) to hold a contest open to "all bands in the Connecticut region," says a Mohegan press release.
To enter, follow the homepage banners of any of the three radio stations to a dedicated webpage where you can upload a video of you and/or your band performing an original song. Two winners -- one for each night -- will play a 30-minute set before Bon Jovi performs and receive five pairs of tickets to the show.
The contest begins today and runs through next Monday, March 22.

Another Chance to Ask Richie a Question
Two years ago, Richie sat down with MusicRadar for an extended podcast interview during which he graciously answered questions from readers.
Well, some of them. The number of responses from MusicRadar viewers was so overwhelming that there was no way we could put all the questions - even ever a quarter of them - to Richie.
But we're going to try again. In a little over a week, Sambora is going to hang with MusicRadar for another comprehensive interview. We'll talk about Bon Jovi's latest album, The Circle, and the massive 18th-month tour that will see the pride of the Garden State play three dates at the brand-new Meadowlands Stadium (in New Jersey, natch) along with - get this! - 12 dates at London's O2 Arena.
And, oh yes, we'll put to him as many of your questions as we can.
Get involved! Choose your question for Richie Sambora, and submit it like this:
Via MusicRadar (log in to musicraar, and leave a comment as usual)
Via Twitter (follow @musicradar and tag your submission with #askmusicradar)
Via Facebook (become a fan and post suggestions on our wall)
Or via ask@musicradar.com (just send an email the old-fashioned way)
We'll pick the very best questions and ask them during the interview. Good luck!
Holy cow! Has it been two years already? I have the other Q&A session on my iPod; you should be able to get it here if you haven't heard it already.

Wow
That's just about all I could say after reading this post on a LiveJournal blog.
I can't really paraphrase it and do it justice, but I'll give it a try. Apparently, there's a Subway (sandwich shop) at the Fargodome. One of their vehicles was "stuck" in front of the garage (keys mistakenly locked inside) and it was blocking Jovi crew from getting the show gear loaded up. A locksmith had been called, but the crew didn't want to wait and one of them smashed open the window of the truck so it could be moved.
Now, I don't know if the person involved was actually crew or not, and restitution is being made, but still, that made me sit back on this rainy, gray Monday and say whoa.
And I thought I was having a bad day...

More on the HOF
From Richie and Tico.

The ultimate example of being accepted would be a spot in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, an organization that has snubbed the act. Torres said there’s no rush to be elected there.
“There’s a lot of great bands and there’s only a few that can be put in every time they have that,” he said. “So I don’t know. Again it’s one of those things that we’re not going anywhere right away. So, hopefully, one day, you never know.”
Sambora, on the other hand, explained Bon Jovi should be accepted into the rock hall.
“After you look at our track record and how many people that we’ve made happy in the world through our music,” he said, “yes, I think we deserve to be in there.
“Do I think we’re going to get in? Don’t know. It is definitely a political situation. It’s almost like running for office over there ... We just became eligible, I think, this year by some technicality. I think you have to be 25 years and our first single came out in ‘84 or something like that, so there was something that was wonky. So we’re eligible now this year, so we’ll see what happens.”

Preaching To The Converted
Came across a two-part article: Bon Jovi Belongs in the Rock Hall of Fame". I included the photo they used in Part 2 of the band because I have to say the Bolo tie was by far the worst fashion accessory of the 80's. I'd rather see them in Swatch watches and Jordache bags (yes, even though they're guys) than those ties. Tico is totally adorable in his specs, and my favorite headwear makes an appearance :)
Part 1 Part 2
You can also sign a petition to tell the Rock HOF that you want Bon Jovi inducted here. Ordinarily, I'd say your vote matters, but frankly in this case, it probably doesn't. Still, it's a nice show of support for our favorite band.
PS, funny coincidence, Sambora's "Great Hall of Fame" is on the iPod as I'm reading the articles :)
I love it when stuff like that happens.
