He Comes by the Duck Lips Honestly

Rocker JON BON JOVI stunned his bandmates during a recent taping of in-depth U.S. chat show INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO by confessing he used to be a band geek.

Host James Lipton had done his homework and revealed an embarrassing secret about the Livin' On A Prayer singer's past - a fact even longtime songwriting partner Richie Sambora was unaware of.

Bon Jovi revealed, "I played a little trumpet in high scool and (I was) in a marching band... Sexiest rock star in the world right there."

Shocked Sambora said, "I've known the guy for 27 years; I didn't know he was in a marching band."

I can NOT wait for the airing Monday night!

PS, I married a trumpet player. Very strong lips....

See Jon bon for only $1000!

Hey, it may be cheaper than O2 tickets!

Seriously, though, Jon Bon Jovi will play Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's birthday party.

He'll headline an event on December 17 at the Sheraton Towers in Manhattan, which is also a fund-raiser for Andrew Cuomo 2010. Tickets cost $1,000 per person, and bundlers are encouraged to buy tables (and a pass to the VIP reception before the dinner) for $10,000. Donors can also become "gold" and "silver" chairs for $25,000 and $50,000, respectively.

I have other things to spend my money on...

Great Interview

Thanks, M, for pointing me at this:
To say that rock band Bon Jovi is on a high right now is an understatement. After all, 26 years is a long time to be in any job, let alone one as volatile as being rock stars. And Bon Jovi are celebrating their silver jubilee in a big way.

On Monday, they performed their latest single "We Weren't Born To Follow" in Berlin, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Then, there's the book and documentary special "Bon Jovi: When We Were Beautiful". The book traces the history of the band, while the documentary captures the excitement of last year's "Lost Highway" tour.

And let's not forget the new album released [this week]: Critics are raving that "The Circle" is one of the band's best works since the days of anthemic rock in the late '80s.

The hair may be smaller but the tunes are still as big. We caught up with the band in Tokyo while they were there promoting their new album to talk about their journey.

Special thanks to Universal Music and Hiromi Inomata

The word "circle" denotes "completion." Are you guys done?

Jon: A friend of ours gave it to us, and her name is even on the credit. She suggested the title and I said, "Don't say anymore. I know exactly what this means." This could mean something different to everybody but to me it means it's never ending.

It's sort of what we feel about our band. In very New Jersey terms, it's very hard to get in, and even harder to get out.

Tico: Infinity is a wonderful way to look at music because there is no end.

So this is not the end for you?

Jon: No! That's looking at the dark side, that we've come full circle. It's not a return to our beginning - for me it was continuation, to just keep going.

Do you feel pressure to top your hits every time you release a new song?

David: All you can do is the best you can do. We've always been that way. Do the best you can do, put it out there, and that's all you can do.

Richie: As a band, we happen to be in a unique position. If we made a record and didn't like it, we just start over. It's not like a new band who makes a record with the little amount of money and time they've got, and they've got to put it out no matter what.

Even the experiment that we did with the Nashville record ("Lost Highway"), we said: 'Let's see what happens. If we don't like it, we just don't put it out.' But we all loved it, so we put it out, and the world loved it, too, thank God! Anytime a door opens for you to evolve, and you think you can do it, you've got to step through that door.

What's a normal day in the life of a rock star like?

Richie: Let's see, I wake up in the morning at six o'clock, wake my daughter up, make some breakfast, get her ready for school, drive her to school, come home, take a little nap because I was up late the night before, get ready, go to the studio, work for a few hours, come back, have dinner with my daughter, do some homework, and start again the next day.

That's what home looks like usually. It's like a strange dichotomy because at home you're just a dad, but on the road you're a rock star. I think that part of our success is that we've been able to actually balance that and be able to flow between both those dichotomies of identities seamlessly after all these years.

David: Actually the biggest difference is that you get more sleep when you are touring! Because you don't have to wake up at six o'clock to bring your kids to school! I've got three kids, I drive one to school, come back wake up the other one, drive that kid to school, come back and … after three hours, it's nine o'clock in the morning!

Richie: I think all four of us, when we are home, we are family guys. We pay attention to our families. Take out the garbage just like everyone else, and do everything else that everybody else does.

David: I make my kid take out the garbage!

Richie: It's hard to make my daughter take out the garbage.

David: Yeah, that's the good part about a son. But the daughter can do the dishwashing and laundry!

Richie: Yeah, she's got other chores.

When are you guys coming to Singapore?

Richie: It's on the list. I would say the first quarter of 2011. It's not even 2010 yet so it's impossible to think that far ahead, but that's what - from the scheduling conversations that we are having - it looks like.

Do you foresee a time when the music's over?

Richie: It doesn't look like we are stopping, does it?

David: 70 more years, and that's it! 70 more years, and I'll be done. I think it's always been the undying faith that kept us going. If you think you can make it happen, it can happen.

source

I laughed at David's and Richie's comments. I would LOVE to sit down with them and shoot the breeze. Wonder if any of their kids used to run around the house with underpants on their heads and a towel for a cape....

And as an aside, I'm on board for 70 more years...

Boston Guy Won't Give Up

This is the best article I've seen yet about the guy from coughmycoughtowncough who is appealing the ruling that nope, super-mega-rock-stars Bon Jovi didn't in fact steal his "Man I Really Love This Team" song:
A Boston man has decided to appeal a judge's ruling, opting to continue his $400 billion lawsuit against Bon Jovi and Major League Baseball. Samuel Steele claims Bon Jovi stole his "(Man I Really) Love This Team" to create "I Love This Team," a song that appeared a lot during the 2007 World Series. Steele Claims Bon Jovi heard the song in 2004, when it became something of a regional hit, and stole his joint.

But at a trial to determine whether or not the lawsuit could continue, Steele's own musicologist claimed the songs aren't alike. A judge ruled that the case should be thrown out, but Steele is still fighting, going to the Court of Appeals.

Dude, just scale back your asking price a bit, and maybe you can get a settlement. Go down to like $34, and maybe JBJ will throw you some paper.

I'll go one further. Dude go down to $34, and I'll give it to you. Meet me at the train station.

Can we be done with this now?

Oh wait! Bon Jovi caused me lose my virginity to some tool in High School. That's gotta be worth a couple hundred billion, right? Class Action Lawsuit, here we come! Any other takers?

Busy, Busy, Richie

Remember how in interviews, Richie says he loves getting calls to sit in on sessions with other artists? Well, one of the latest is Donny Osmond's new single: I Have You To Thank. You can listen to it here.

The song was co-produced by Gavin DeGraw and Buddy Cannon, and features Richie Sambora on guitar.

Preview the MSG DVD

Thanks, C, for dropping this to me :)

That's right, PREVIEW of the DVD.

You get a 1 minute clip of all the songs on the DVD. None of the reported bonus material (which according to Wikipedia ~ and we know how reliable THAT is ~ includes not only Bad Name, Runaway and Bed of Roses, but also, surprise surprise, the documentary. With curses? Or without?) but still, looks like it's a must-have for sure.

For those who are interested, I've downloaded the little clips and will be putting them out to the SkyDrive. If nothing else, they're GREAT for taking screen caps of :)

New York Post Article

Yeah, I know, it's the post, but I like the honesty in the article.
After the band’s country-flavored detour on 2007’s “Lost Highway,” Bon Jovi has taken a very right turn back onto the New Jersey Turnpike for “The Circle.”

“The Circle,” the band’s 11th studio effort, is named to recall the band’s earliest arena-ready, radio-friendly songwriting aspirations that eventually filled stadiums.

Right from the start of this record, Jon Bon Jovi, backed by his original band, takes a stand with the big, bold rocker “We Weren’t Born To Follow.” Realistically, this is a silly song for anybody but a dopey teenager to sing, but Bon Jovi doesn’t know any better and breathes new life into one of the basic tenets of the American dream.

That mythic dream is at the heart of this album, which features songs about fighting authority, discovering a personal path, overcoming life’s obstacles, savoring the good times and learning to laugh when things go bad.

From end to end, this is an upbeat record that never wanders into sap, even on the sentimental “Love’s the Only Rule” and the nostalgic “When We Were Beautiful.”

Credit for keeping the disc’s edge sharp goes as much to Tico Torres’ aggressive drumming, the keyboard fills of underrated David Bryan and Richie Sambora’s versatile guitar work as it does to Jon Bon Jovi’s vocals, which still have clarity, depth and passion.

Like his wealthy colleague Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi will take his knocks for this album’s blue-collar sentiments — especially in the song “Work for the Workingman.” But after several plays, it’s clear that success hasn’t warped Jonny B. Rather, it has shown him the dignity in a blistered hand and a weary mind after a hard day

Just Say No

This article cracked me up.

Rocker Jon Bon Jovi has vowed never to act again as he finds audition process too tough.

The singer has starred in films including 'Pay It Forward' and 'U-571', and made guest appearances on U.S. TV shows 'The West Wing', 'Sex and the City' and 'Ally McBeal'.

The 'It's my life' hit-maker was recently lined up to appear in cop drama 'Criminal Minds', but he turned the project down and instead his role went to another rocker, Gavin Rossdale.

Now the singer has decided that he won't be trying out for any more acting roles - because he finds the industry too grueling.

"What I hated was sitting in some waiting room to audition for some shit role that five other actors already turned down, and I walk in and he goes, 'You're too short.' Fuck off.

SO much made me laugh.

First, honestly, he didn't "star" in U-571. He got killed less than halfway through. Looked fanFREAKINGtastic in uniform, but hardly starred. Ditto "Pay It Forward". But hey, both those movies were better than "Pucked", in which he actually DID star....

I loved the quote attributed to him. I can just see him hearing some director telling him he's too short, and can totally hear his voice in my head giving that response. Gah, to be a fly on THAT wall...

Bon Jovi getting down to business, as a band and brand

NEW YORK — These self-made Jersey guys, they know the deal. Just look at The Boss. And Tony, of course. And especially this Jon Bon Jovi out of Middletown, by way of Perth Amboy, Metuchen and Sayreville.

Here he is, in a new documentary about him and his mega-successful rock band, pitching himself to a rep from a group of potential NFL franchise-buyers: "I'm the CEO of a major corporation who has been running a brand for 25 years."

Here he is recently at his manager's office in Manhattan, explaining to an interviewer how that band and brand have survived in the entertainment world's fool-filled fountain:"By the time you're 47, if you haven't learned how to run it as a business, you're not going to make it."

REVIEW: 'Full Circle' delivers on all counts

And here he is just before that, brightening at a mention of his charitable foundation's Hurricane Katrina home-building efforts in Houma, La.: "The thing I'm proudest of, by the one-year anniversary, those 28 people were in their homes. By cracking the whip, yelling, finger-pointing – we got it done."

Now, the suburbanites' heartthrob/philanthropist/family man/slightly graying rock star is trying to get it done again, corralling his sometimes wayward but ultimately loyal bandmates into another grueling and gratifying round of international brand extension. At the center is the release today of Bon Jovi's 11th studio album, The Circle, a work full of arena-friendly rock anthems stylistically different from its platinum-plus predecessor, 2007's country-inflected Lost Highway. Producer John Shanks (Lost Highway, Have a Nice Day) returns

Some of the songs were inspired by news events that occurred just before and after the election of President Obama, for whom Jon campaigned, and reflect the despair and determination of working-class Americans. It's a social stratum to which he and co-writer/guitarist/New Jerseyite Richie Sambora, despite their wealth and success, have always related.

"I'm not on that (unemployment) line, and I do have a different lifestyle," Bon Jovi says. "But I'm not too young or too naive to understand what's going on now. ... Those people's voices are in the songs."

Says Sambora: "You never forget where you came from. You just don't."

Other songs aim for a universal message, particularly the current single, We Weren't Born to Follow. It has found its mark: On Monday night, the band performed it at an event commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, staged at the Brandenburg Gate.

Sambora's all in

The album also marks the return of a fully engaged Sambora, 50, who spent much of the Lost Highway period dealing with a divorce from actress Heather Locklear, his father's death from lung cancer, a broken arm, and a rehab stint to deal with addictions to alcohol and painkillers.

"I thought I was showing up 100%, but I wasn't," Sambora says. "I didn't hit rock-bottom or anything, but I was limping. And the people around me said, 'Hey, he needs help.' "

Now, he says, "I've straightened that stuff out and I'm working on all cylinders."

His friend concurs: "On this record," Bon Jovi says, "I had to be on my game because he was way on his game, and it's so great to see it. Just so, so great."

That theme of loyalty tested by turmoil emerges on Bon Jovi: When We Were Beautiful (named after a Circle track), a documentary directed by Phil Griffin that made its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in April and is airing on Showtime. (A deluxe version of the album contains the DVD.)

The reasonably revealing portrait ("We'd been mulling it for years and finally decided to pull the trigger," Bon Jovi says) explores the band's first quarter-century, set against the Lost Highway tour, the highest-grossing outings ($210 million) of 2008.

The band will try to top those numbers with another global jaunt, which launches Feb. 19 in Seattle. It will encompass 135 dates in 30 countries over nearly two years.

Tying everything together is a promotional deal that epitomizes the Bon Jovi organization's business acumen: Last month, NBC Universal announced an "Artists in Residence" program, with Jon and the band as the first partners. Under the agreement, the group supplies interviews, performances and guest-star appearances exclusively for the company's broadcast/cable news and entertainment outlets. Included in the two-month deal (neither side would disclose financial terms) are appearances on Today (every Wednesday in November) and Saturday Night Live (Dec. 12) and a guest spot on Bravo's Inside the Actors Studio (Monday).

Bon Jovi says the outlines of the idea originated with the band's manager, Jack Rovner. He and Island Def Jam Music Group chairman L.A. Reid summoned NBC head Jeff Zucker, who liked the approach and secured corporate approval. The program is expected to continue with other performers.

When asked whether the concept of being an in-house artist for a corporation would have made him gag when he was a rebellious long-haired punk in the 1980s, Bon Jovi snorts. "Nah, the whole model was so different then. Five years ago, you wouldn't have considered something like that. But the business has changed, and every time I know the rules, they change."

Fortunately, he says, fully aware of the irony, being The Man instead of sticking it to The Man "is socially acceptable now!"

Jon's the quarterback

Swept up in these ever-shifting enterprises are Sambora and the other integral players, keyboardist David Bryan and drummer Tico Torres, all of whom have followed the leader, with varying degrees of satisfaction, since the group formed in 1983.

Bryan, who concedes in the film that he was "semi-bothered" by the lack of democracy in the band, nevertheless says "life is good" and channels his excess creative energy into composing music and writing lyrics for theater. His and Joe DiPietro's Memphis rock musical recently opened on Broadway to decent reviews, their Toxic Avenger is playing off-Broadway, and he's working on other productions.

"All of us celebrate and support each other's outside work," he says. "But the band is always first for all of us."

Torres praises Jon's "very good business mind" and leadership skills, which he says have benefited all of them: "I've never seen a football team grow without listening to the quarterback." His non-band time is devoted to golf, his Tico Torres Children Foundation and painting – he'll show 50 works at the Art Basel exhibition in Miami Beach next month.

So with everyone focused and armed with a proven plan of attack – 120 million albums sold and 2,600-plus concerts performed for more than 34 million fans – Jon strives to lead the band toward a more elusive goal: induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He and Sambora are in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the group has won a Grammy and People's Choice awards. But they were eligible for Rock Hall recognition this year yet were left cooling their heels outside those gates in Cleveland, along with the Pet Shop Boys of the world.

Never the 'critics' darling'

Why, given their undeniable success? A lack of "originality or depth," says veteran rock journalist Robert Hilburn, author of the new Cornflakes With John Lennon memoir and a member of the Hall's nomination panel. "You could throw out all their music and it wouldn't have affected rock 'n' roll's history one bit."

The group has heard similar criticism throughout most of its career. Three of the members say they're happy just being the "people's band" and aren't bothered by the snub. "We've never been the critics' darling ... because we were labeled with that 'hair band' thing when we came up," Sambora says. "It will come."

But the CEO sees it as a dis, and a challenge. "It bothers me a lot," Bon Jovi says. "Yeah, I'll tell you that it bothers me. It disappointed me greatly. Who wouldn't want to be in a club along with The Beatles and the Stones?"

Fortunately, after all these years, Jersey's favored sons know how to confront the problem: Keep working the deal, keep nursing the chip on the shoulder, keep taking fresh music to the people.

"Come see us," Sambora says. "We'll convince you!"

NBC Nightly News

Last night's NBC Nightly News' "Make A Difference" segment was on Jon Bon Jovi and the millions of dollars he's used to help impoverished families in Philadelphia and New Jersey as part of the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation.

The foundation places low income and special needs families into apartments in Newark on a temporary basis until they can find jobs. It's often the first time that many of the beneficiaries have had a home of their own.

Bon Jovi encourages people who've benefited from the Soul Foundation to use what they have as a force for good in the world.

"I say 'Here, it's yours. You know, now take care of it. Do the right thing. Pay it forward. Go to job training. Go to classes that are provided here. Learn a job.'"

When Williams asked Bon Jovi if individuals can make a difference in their communities, the rock star was emphatic.

"I'm a firm believer, Brian, in the power of We. I say that over and over. The government can't do it alone. The private sector can't do it alone. But, with the power of We...Yeah, I do think that we can make a difference."

And the fact that the band is in the middle of heavy promotion of the record and gearing up for the tour -- I just don't get why JB would do this on his own... UNLESS it's like the Inside the Actor's Studio thing and the rest of the band is there even though they're branding it as just Jon.

In any event, following AMEX on Twitter can't be all that bad, and you can always unfollow afterwards :)

Two nice clips (Thanks, J!) and a whole mess of screen shots ripped from same.  The full set of pictures that P pulled are in my Photobucket.  The interviews are in my SkyDrive.

Full-Band Interview

A full-band interview in Italy (Thanks, devotee P for dropping this in my inbox).  A couple things.  First, we all hope that's coke in Richie's wine glass.  Second, I know on a couple different sites, there's talk about Jon's remark that the US audiences only know the chorus to the songs, which is why the "non-US" venues get what the die-hard fans call the better setlists.

I think this tour is the perfect opportunity to PROVE HIM WRONG!

Come on people!  Especially if you're in the first dozen or so rows and you KNOW they can see you -- make the effort to learn all the words and let them see you singing along!  That goes for you too, Mr. and Ms. Corporate Freebie Ticket Taker who couldn't care less about the show, you just want the comped drinks.

The interview is up on YouTube.

Jon and Richie on "This Morning"

Interview with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora; Richie answers a lot of the questions (yay) and the interviewer did call  Jon on the ticket prices.  Good for him!  Asked if Jon knew about the prices and had any say in them.  Jon talked around it, saying he'll take some of the blame for that, but has to look into whether they're "richly priced" or not, and he should be more on top of the prices than he should be.

Also a cute anecdote about Keep The Faith.

Great appearance, I think; more energy and smiles than some of the other appearances that have been cropping up lately.

An interesting interview.  The video was too large for my SkyDrive, but the MP3 rip is up there.

GMTV Appearance

I really wish they'd actually PLAY the song, not just have Jon sing to playback. And the solo cut... can someone tell me why they'd do that? In any event, the vid and the mp3 rip are up on the SkyDrive.

Hey, but at least Huey was there...

I will say, they're looking tired. I know they're doing a lot to promote this record, and are all over the place, but damn, they're starting to show a little wear. Guess they're entitled, after all, they aren't kids anymore!

A couple sound bytes: Jon says that the O2 residency is "it". There are no other shows on the continent, but they'll be there for several weeks. Richie's jazzed to bring the kids over to London when school lets out. Ought to be a fund time in London-Town this summer!

Work for the Working Man

The lyrics of rock band Bon Jovi's new track 'Work For The Working Man' have been put up by US President Barack Obama's chief adviser David Axelrod in his White House office.

The band recently released their eleventh studio album 'The Circle', containing the song based on a news report about a small town in Ohio, whose local economy was destroyed when shipping company DHL closed its local depot.

The chorus sees Jon Bon Jovi 'raise a hand' to help while the verses depict an unlucky worker juggling two jobs, and making ends meet 'by the grace of God', reports the BBC.

The singer revealed Axelrod hung up the song for daily inspiration.

The rocker said: 'He's had them framed, before the album's even out, as an inspiration to the work they're doing every day.'

Must See TV

NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams “Making A Difference” segment is scheduled to feature Jon Bon Jovi on Monday, November 9th, 2009.   The JBJ Soul Foundation posted a nice article about the show thanking its donors and mentioning is was a chance to see their donation dollars in action.

For those who get NBC, don't forget to tune in!
