A Conversation with Richie Sambora

The full article is here.

In this Q&A, Sambora talks about the band's longevity, how touring keeps a band young and he reveals that Bon Jovi's next album will be a "rocking" affair.

Eric Lewis: Hey Richie. Thanks very much for the interview. How is everything going, and what has the band been up to recently?

Richie Sambora: Everything is going great. Jon and I have been in the studio working on new music, and tomorrow night (Thursday, June 18) we are both being inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in New York City. A great night is expected!

E.L.: Your upcoming Moncton show on June 27 will be your first date on the east coast of Canada since 1993 ... that hardly seems fair to us, especially for a band that tours so consistently.

R.S.: I agree, which is why we are so happy to come this summer.

E.L.: It's been 25 years for Bon Jovi. Why do you feel the band has remained so popular all this time?

R.S.: Two main reasons: the fans and the songs. The two combined together make a wonderful connection. The other very important ingredient are the shows; Bon Jovi really loves to do live shows and it is truly a fun time for us all.

E.L.: What's making the band's set list these days? The band has albums, rarities and even a country album now to pull from for tunes. What can we expect in Moncton?

R.S.: All of the set lists are posted on www.bonjovi.com so that is a good reference but, the set lists (are) done by Jon on the night of the show so, who knows?!

E.L.: Be honest - what's your favourite tune to play, and why?

R.S.: Wanted Dead or Alive is a great (one), but all of the songs are fun to play, and it is so hard to put one in front of the other.

E.L.: Is there one song that seems to get the best reaction from the crowd each night?

R.S.: Each town is different, and we look forward to the Moncton show to find out what you guys like best.

E.L.: Is touring getting tougher as the band members age? Twenty-five years and a pretty hectic road schedule most of the time can't be easy.

R.S.: Touring keeps you young, there is no better place to be and nothing better to be doing.

E.L.: What's been the reaction to the latest album, Lost Highway?

R.S.: Triple platinum in Canada, can't beat that!

E.L.: What do you expect the next album to sound like? Is there a timeline for a new record?

R.S.: In the studio now, and it is a rocking record!

E.L.: Bon Jovi didn't really hit it big until the Slippery When Wet album in 1986. Do you think a band today would be given a chance to release three albums before 'making it big'?

R.S.: The industry is very different today, and what probably has been lost is career development.

E.L.: Bon Jovi has taken some lengthy breaks between certain albums. Yet, since Crush in 2000, the band has been consistently releasing albums and touring. Do you expect this pace to continue?

R.S.: Absolutely.

E.L.: Bon Jovi has always had its critics ... after 25 years, do they ever get to you?

R.S.: It is always about the fans.

E.L.: Do Canadian audiences react differently, or is there something else about performing up here that is different than other markets?

R.S.: Canada is a very important market for Bon Jovi and will always be very important to the band.

E.L.: Charity work has always been something dear to Bon Jovi. Why is it so important to you guys?

R.S.: It is always important to help out wherever and whenever you can; that goes for the band and all the fans, the power of 'we' is how things get done.

E.L.: Anything else you'd like to add?

R.S.: Looking forward to seeing everyone in Moncton!

Richie Goes Home

Rocker Richie Sambora is seen arriving at LAX airport with a "mystery blonde" who did her best to avoid the camera and her and Richie left alone in a stretch limousine.

"Mystery Blonde"? Can these people see? That's Nikki Lund, the woman with whom he's preparing a clothing line for release this summer. Could the rumors that they're dating be true?

And why on EARTH would you NOT want to be photographed with Richie?

Double-Delish

On behalf of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Jon Bon Jovi and Matthew McConaughey will make special appearances at the National Conference for Service and Volunteering. To an audience of more than 4,500 service leaders, they will share plans for EIF’s new multi-year campaign to help make service and volunteerism a national priority.

At the opening session, Jon Bon Jovi will address the conference and play a short musical set to celebrate the year-round work of hundreds of service organizations represented at the event.

Matthew McConaughey will introduce a brief video that will give the group a sneak peak at what EIF and the entertainment industry have planned. Both are long supporters of service.

Blue Parrot Update

Jon Bon Jovi and actress RenĂ©e Zellweger indulged in a plate of smoky Chipotle Guacamole at the Blue Parrot in East Hampton on Friday. The celebrity duo, also rumored to be among the revamped hotspot’s investors, got a sneak peek taste of the Blue Parrot's Tex Mex menu, which is set to open this weekend.

The Parrot has been doing these "sneak preview" days at random, to build up the buzz and get people interested in trying the place out.

It's working.

My spies in the Hamptons tell me that Weekenders and Renters are talking about the eatery, which means you won't be able to get near the place if you're a local. BUT, said Renters will not be able to purchase a Blue Parrot T-shirt, unless they can get the Weekenders to do it for them. The Locals will have nothing to do with the place until the Hamptons close down for the winter (regardless of what Ron Perelman recently told New York Magazine).

So, on to the menu. My spies have not been invited to indulge, but Hamptons.com reports that the Chipotle Guacamole served with homemade tortilla chips, meatballs al Chipotle, The Blue Parrot Taquitos (three soft taquitos with your choice of chicken, bistec, shrimp or pork) and the Grilled tuna steak, have made the cut to land on the menu. They plan to offer "vegetarian" dishes (that's what Ron calls the cheese quesadillas) and $9 margaritas, which is a steal for the Hamptons.

Managing partner Andrew Chapman promises the Karaoke nights will be back, and one can only hope that the other partners will get drunk and stupid on those nights :)

On this day...

... in 1997, Jon Bon made his NY solo club debut in support of "Destination Anywhere".

To celebrate, two of my favorite songs from that record.

What are your faves?

My New Love

Her name is Darlin', and she's a 2009 Ford Edge SLE. She's classified as a "crossover vehicle" which means (to me, at least) that she's got lots of room like an SUV, but drives like a car. She's cinnamon colored (shown in the pic), with cloth interior (hate sticking to leather in the summer -- SHUT UP, TARA!) a sunroof and Sirius satellite radio, and is my new favorite toy.

I got her Saturday at my friendly neighborhood Ford dealership. They let me have her for $2000 on my Visa card with a promise to return with a bank check for the remainder of the down payment. I can't believe there are still trusting souls in this world -- it gives me hope.

I had to sign my name approximately 32 times, which is only 17 fewer than I had to sign when I bought my house :)

She's equipped with Microsoft Sync, which basically means my Blackberry and iPod are voice-activated!!! (T, when I was talking to you yesterday afternoon, it was through the radio in my car.)

One of my all-time favorite commercials is for a Ford Focus, where they are playing with the Sync technology ("Play artist Korn" lol):

Needless to say, my car already knows how to respond to "Play artist Bon Jovi" :)

There is no Michael Bolton on my iPod, so I don't have to worry about being made fun of by a linebacker. There is, however, Spongebob Squarepants. The Hathlet thinks it's cool, too, and had the keyless-entry code memorized in about 3 seconds.

Do Ya Read The Daily Gleaner?

Bon Jovi fans have a chance for an up-close-and-personal VIP experience at the band's Magnetic Hill concert this month.

Bon Jovi plays Magnetic Hill on Saturday, June 27, with the lead opening act Bachman-Cummings, as well as State of Shock, Mobile and Alfa Rococo.

General admission tickets have been selling briskly, but The Daily Gleaner has teamed up with Donald K. Donald Entertainment Group to give fans a chance for an exclusive musical experience.

The Daily Gleaner will be giving away VIP ticket packages to three lucky readers. Each VIP package includes seating for two at stage-front tables under a Brunswick News Inc. tent, and complimentary food and beverages.

Read Wednesday's Gleaner for details on how you can win VIP passes.

The Blue Parrot -- she is OPEN!

Sources say that they've got top-shelf margaritas and a "super hip crowd". Since it's the Hamptons, the prices are a little high -- not expensive, but smallish portions for the sticker price. Full menu isn't available yet.

Sending my MIL on a mission this week :)
