Show review (LV Sun)

A really good article from the Las Vegas Sun.

Some highlights from the article...
Last night’s Bon Jovi concert appears to be the first show at the new Joint to not sell out.

The 4,000-seat venue opened its doors at the Hard Rock last weekend with a trilogy of inaugural weekend sellouts, The Killers, Avenged Sevenfold and Paul McCartney.

(One should note, however, that the Avenged Sevenfold sellout was largely a surprise.)

While many thought last night’s session of classic rock revival would be an easy draw, the increasingly cash-conscious public didn’t truly bite.

And the show wasn’t cheap: Tickets ranged in price from $191 to $746, before taxes and fees.

When Bon Jovi played the MGM Grand last April, ticket prices ranged from $68.25 to $210.

Meanwhile, passes to the band’s next gig at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival are just $40 – a fraction of last night’s prices.

A box office sales agent admitted there were “a considerable amount” of floor seats available at 9:50 p.m. last night, just 10 minutes before Jon Bon and the boys took to the stage.

General admission on the floor came to about $205 per person.

The band treated fans to updated renditions of “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “It’s my Life,” and “You Give Love a Bad Name,” among several other hits from their collection.

When it came time for "I'll Be There for You," the frontman turned the mic over to guitarist Richie Sambora, who performed double duty and manned both lead guitar and vocals as his bandmate took a break backstage.

Sambora had no problem stepping up to the plate. He sounded good and hit all his notes – the high ones and the low ones, too.

The 49-year-old guitarist also won bonus points for his spot-on solos: While some might complain they were predictable and lacked improvisation, Sambora made the most of his time in the spotlight while never taking things too far or for too long.

Give the whole thing a read if you have a minute or two.

Damn, I wish I had been able to go....

David on Q104.3 Radio

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

In case you're not in the know (as I wasn't, seeing as how I live in Boston), this is a NY Classic Rock radio station. David was on the Jim Kerr show on April 21.

There are several pics of him in the studio, which I thought were cool, and two brief video clips of him doing some songs: both Toxie and Jovi tunes (they just happened to have a keyboard set up for him). I have to wonder, if the DJs had brought in their kids' Casios, would David still have played? Suppose he's an equipment snob?

Anyway, I love the backdrop for some of the photos: the racks and racks of CDs. That SO reminds me of when I was a spinner at my college radio station. We were called spinnes because we actually had racks and racks of records way back then. You remember records, don't you, gentle reader? We had only one rack of CDs, and we all mourned the conversion.

*snif*

I haven't been in a radio station control room for what seems like eons, but I would think most stations would have their collections computerized, no? I mean I'm glad to see this isn't the case because I remember that there was nothing more fun than going through the stacks and pulling vinyl, leaving the sleeves sticking out an inch or two so you could find where to re-file them.

Of course, the re-filing was no fun.

Richie is Bon Jovi's drummer?

Seriously; I know not everyone is a fan, but COME ON PEOPLE!

Sambora on drums?

I mean, we all know that is firmly in his repertoire, but I think the last time I checked there was a swarthy Cubano in that role for the band. Or did I miss a meeting?

This site may brag about Real Estate being their Domain, but isn't part of the RE biz being aware of who your largest clients are?

There's a section in that article about Two Liberty Place, and they say:
The Residences at Two Liberty are resorting to celebrity appeal to attract high end buyers. Big names like former mayoral candidate Tom Knox, Phillies ace Cole Hamels, and Bon Jovi drummer Richie Sambora have bought units.

Not that I'd mind seeing Richie's arms bunch and flex as he pounds the skins (shut up, pervs) but really. The drummer. Of Bon Jovi.

*sigh*

The Dolphin Story...

I know everyone's seen this all over the 'net, and I'm not going to dwell on it except to say that I'm glad the kids weren't there to see it. We had the unique experience of being on Main Beach in the Hamptons when a young dolphin, not more than two or three years old, beached itself near where we were playing.

Several people jumped into the water to keep it company, keeping it hydrated and giving it some loving contact. The poor creature had a gash along one side, and you could see in its eyes and hear in its cries that the dolphin was in pain.

The Hathlet, 6 at the time, was infatuated with dolphins, and wanted to watch until the marine rescue unit took the creature away. He sat on my shoulders for more than an hour while the MRU rigged up their sling and got enough volunteers to carry it to the van.

When the sling passed us, Hathlet scrambled to be put down and followed them to the van. Later that night, he asked if the animal would be alright. Then he asked if the animal's mom and dad were worried about it. Unfortunately, that particular dolphin's story didn't have a happy ending, either. It had been hit by a boat and the prop damage was severe. I wish I had been stronger and ignored my son's begging to watch the MRU try to rescue that dolphin. I should have tried to shield him from that.
